JLT Group - developing emerging leaders on every continent

JLT Group is one of the world's leading providers of insurance, reinsurance, advice on employee benefits, brokerage and associated services. The Group sought a training partner to help develop the first cohort of employees identified as potential leaders. Once a rigorous process had narrowed the field down to a shortlist of 3 providers, Director of Talent & Development Sarah Dunmore says the decision to appoint Lane4 was an easy one, “We never felt their presentation was ‘off the shelf’. They listened, showed a really good understanding of our requirements and could bring fresh thinking to our business.”

The programme was both innovative and deeply grounded in what our business needed. It offered delegates a diverse experience, using experiential sporting activities.

Leadership development in a sporting context

Over 30 emerging leaders from all corners of the globe joined the programme, and travelled to the UK to take part in the residential training week. The objective was to develop key management competences such as commercial acumen, goal setting, creating a high-performing environment, and influencing stakeholders. Delegates prepared for the week with online training, developed in conjunction with the Open University.

Sarah comments, “The programme was both innovative and deeply grounded in what our business needed. It offered delegates a diverse experience, using experiential sporting activities. It was a superb programme and I couldn’t have been happier.”

The experiential activities included wheelchair basketball, raft-building, and observation of a badminton coaching session with top athletes in action. The cross-functional, multi-national groups of delegates also collaborated on a business simulation and made video diaries of their learning through the week.

Success first time

Sarah continues, “This was a very high-profile programme and the first time we’d brought together such a large group at this level in a structured way. We took some calculated risks, including a day on equine leadership, which is relatively new to the UK and unknown in the insurance industry. It gave a true sense of emotional intelligence and what leadership is about.”

Delegates were not briefed on the details of the programme in advance: “We wanted them to keep an open mind. After some initial reservations, they came to trust us and go with the flow. Each day built on the previous day, and every evening delegates asked the same question: ‘How on earth will you top that tomorrow?’”

It is still early days, but Sarah says the week has already had a noticeable impact, “Delegates are actively enjoying integrating what they learnt into their day-to-day roles. Senior managers report observing a difference, saying that delegates are using their new-found skills with enthusiasm and have an appetite for change.”
